Shelley White (Vice President)

Shelley K. White is a sociologist and public health professor at Boston College. As a teacher, researcher, artist, and activist, she focuses on health equity and social justice. For over a decade, she has developed curricula and led experiential learning programs in southern Arizona in partnership with dozens of local organizations. Over her career, she has also worked in K-12 schools and programming and in youth leadership development focused on social change and social movement strategy.

Cassalyn David (Secretary)

Cassalyn is a resident of Patagonia since 2011 and a founding PYEC Board Member. She earned her BA in Interdisciplinary Studies/International Studies from the University of Arizona and Public Health Master’s Degree from the University of Washington in Community-Oriented Public Health Practice. She has worked at a community health center since 2012, including managing youth and community health worker programs before taking an administrative role in behavioral health services. She has worked in refugee resettlement, affordable housing, and as a National Park Backcountry Ranger. She has hiked from the US-Mexico border to Flagstaff on the Arizona Trail, and enjoys the outdoors with her family. She is the proud parent of a Patagonia Lobo and youth center participant.

Lucy Reyes (Member)

A lawyer by training and educator by calling.

Lucy Reyes is a licensed attorney in Mexico and a former law professor with over ten years of experience teaching law to adult learners and university students pursuing a first, second, and, in some cases, a third career. Although qualified to practice in any legal area, she chose to specialize in family and civil law, moved by her passion for helping people through life’s most personal challenges. Now living in the United States, in her fifth year in education, Lucy discovered a deeper calling in supporting children, driven by a deep belief in the power of early learning and mentorship. Her cross-border legal experience and academic background continues to shape her commitment to justice, critical thinking, and empowerment through knowledge. She is committed to keep learning so she can help to create inclusive, nurturing environments where every child can thrive.

Callie Mattus (Member)

Callie is a passionate educator, wellness advocate, and proud board member of the Patagonia Youth Enrichment Center. As a second-grade teacher at Elgin School and a former nutrition coach, she brings a strong belief in the connection between physical well-being and personal growth. Callie is committed to creating opportunities for youth that support not only their education, but also their health, confidence, and sense of community.

Becky Meyers (Member)

Born in Salt Lake City Utah, Rebecka Meyers (who goes by Becky) was raised around the world as an “Air Force Brat”. Her family eventually settled in the Bay Area of California where she graduated from Saratoga High in 1976. She earned undergraduate degrees at Stanford University in philosophy and biology and went on to medical school at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR.. She decided to pursue a career as a surgeon and trained in general surgery at UCSF in San Francisco followed by fellowships in Pediatric Surgery and Liver Transplant in Philadelphia. She joined the faculty at University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1992, and served there as a pediatric surgeon and professor of pediatric surgery for 30 years. During her time at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City she developed an expertise in pediatric surgical oncology and spent many years as a leader of international clinical trials in children’s liver cancer for the national Children’s Oncology Group, and the Children’s Hepatic tumors International Consortium. Becky retired from clinical surgery in 2022, and from surgical oncology research in 2024. She and her husband, Mike Howard, fell in love with the beauty and community of Patagonia where they moved in the fall of 2022 and have a home out on Harshaw Creek. Her husband Mike is a retired lawyer and native of Great Falls Montana where they have spent their summers for many years. As a couple they enjoy all things outdoors especially fly-fishing, camping, and hunting with their bird dog Smoke.
